Altering body composition differs from weight loss:
Body composition is the ratio of the body’s lean tissue (muscle, bone, ligament, etc.) to the amount of fat. A good ratio of lean tissue to fat leads to a healthy metabolism, decreased inflammation and helps the person feel more energetic and alive.
In weight loss programs, it’s very important not to sacrifice lean tissue for weight loss. What is optimal is to lose fat and maintain or build more lean body tissue. This actually makes the body more efficient at using energy because muscle burns more fuel. And belly fat, in particular, has been associated with insulin resistance, which starts a vicious cycle of energy inefficiency…fatigue, increased hunger and tendency to gain more weight.
